new destination, yeni foça
Yeni Foça is a coastal town situated 20 km away from the center of Foça district, which is located on the peninsula between the Izmir Gulf and the Çandarlı Gulf, 80 km northwest of Izmir city center.
Throughout history, Yeni Foça (Foglia Nuova) has undergone processes of development and change in terms of historical, cultural, and economic aspects. It gained significance as a dowry left to the Republic of Genoa by the Byzantines, became a commercial attraction during the Middle Ages due to its rich alum deposits and hosted people from both shores of the Aegean. Yeni Foça, built around a harbor, was declared a Special Environmental Protection Area in 1990 to preserve its archaeological, architectural, and natural treasures.
Currently, the streets of Yeni Foça are still filled with historic Ottoman and Greek houses. As part of conservation measures, constructing new buildings in most areas of the district is prohibited, allowing Yeni Foça to preserve its unique texture composed of historical houses. The northern sections of the coastal road between Eski Foça (Old Foça) and Yeni Foça, which boasts magnificent bays and offers impressive sea views, are under protection due to the value of the region's flora and fauna.
Citta Slow
The Città Slow philosophy advocates for living at a pace where life is enjoyed. It envisions cities where people can communicate and socialize with each other, cities that are self-sufficient, sustainable, and value handicrafts, nature, traditions, and customs. These cities are also characterized by the absence of infrastructure problems, the use of renewable energy sources, and the incorporation of technological conveniences. Yeni Foça has embraced this philosophy, meeting Città Slow criteria, and has been accepted into the exclusive network of 'Cities where life is good'.
